the reason he would use his claws were just in case he gets disarmed in combat. His sword skills are just so that he doesn't die if an enemy gets in close with a melee weapon. 

I didn't specify this, but when he uses magic to enhance his strength and senses with his mana he is using up power so he will tire himself out if he uses his magic for too long, that's why I list him as a great tracker so he doesn't have to use power for that. Basically, when I listed his magic increasing his senses and physical capabilities, I meant that he uses his mana to make it so that his strength, speed, agility and his ability to detect danger are increased.
