The UK of Great Britain was the superpower at the time, and had one of the best navies and militaries at the time.

If there is a landmass south of the mainland, then I may just try to 'trade' with the island nations by doing what the Spanish explorers did- I'll go up and around to try and trade by bypassing the mainland completely. If there is landmass, they'll stumble right on to it.
