When they died he took his Fathers katana and his mothers Tsukubo from the remnants of his shack and left the coast in search of life. What he found closer resembled death, and he was almost forced to sell his fathers sword when an old sonless man saw him begging on the road side one day and he took him in. The man though old had seen many hazardous days and Emi learned much from him including Battojutsu, but one day when Emi was 16 he came home to the old man lying in bed covered in sweat. The man whispered a few raspy sentences into his ear before laying over not having the strength to sit up any longer, after that the man never moved again his hand still clutched the sword at Emi’s side. The old man had never told him his full name and had never asked the boy for his in return but on that day the man told him his full name, and his story. “In the past my name was Banzai Aito, I had a 5 sons and a wonderful wife, and every night I went to bed with fat pockets for my work. One day I came home and found my oldest son lying there, cuts across his once beautiful cheeks, my house burned behind me, and i picked my son up and took him away to start life anew. When he awoke he blamed me for what had happened, he said I had not been there, he said she had died yelling for me, and he had not been there. So he left, I hear he had three little boys and lived on the coast somewhere… damn boy, ran off with my sword.” Emi cried harder than he had in his whole life as the old mans lifeless face smiled at him. In his hand was a note, in it detailed that Emi was the last heir to his fortunes and his legacy. The note also read “Never forget your true family, never be fooled, or you’ll pay as I did, the day you forget which family is your true family.” It took Emi a long time to truly begin to understand that. Later that year he became a Retainer for Matsudaira, as he seemed to have no family left. Before he left the old man he cut both of his own cheeks deep. Thats when he stopped crying.
