Well for me personally, I maintain a rough sketch sheet in my google docs. Most of my characters are of the 3 archtyes I enjoy playing so it is much like dress up. You pick what is needed from the set, throw in a story sticking with the setting and hope for GM's input regarding what is appropriate and then ready to roll.
