His origins lie, instead, in the fields. His youth was that of a farmer-child, where the harvest was the center of his life and the elder of his family's word was law. His childhood was that of labor and trial, and it drilled into him the discipline bred from a militaristic family. His father, and his father before him, had all served in the legions and earned their military diplomas before retiring to their simple farmstead. And so it was only natural that the lad enlisted, rather voluntarily, himself; His time as a Hastati was spent with the same grueling labours he bore on his farmstead; he was tasked with menial labors, physically draining tasks, as well as emotionally draining ones. He was amongst the many recruits who spent most of their days digging latrines and repairing broken pieces of equipment, before getting a paltry night's sleep and repeating the previous day's labours after another march. He grew up fast-- gone was the simple farm-boy who had joined the legions out of tradition, and suddenly a proud man of Rome had grown into being. The tasks, while draining, served to discipline him. Any youthful rebellion he might have born was broken and beaten away, replaced by the discipline and loyalty befitting a soldier of Rome. He may not have had the education or status that those around him bore, but he was strong and capable- a good soldier. It is no surprise that Servius escalated in the ranks quickly; He was dutiful, loyal, and came from a respected- if minor- military background. While he had never been in any great conflicts or noteworthy battles at this point in his career, he still had been a part of many a fray or skirmish. As Centurion of a Sagitarii Cohort he was often a primary asset in such skirmishes, and proved himself a capable warrior as well as Centurion. He was no exceptional leader, but he was practical and capable, and began to study the art of war in full at this point in his life in order to improve his standing amongst his peers. His studies were varied, studying outside cultures more than Roman itself. It was difficult to find the time to study, of course, as his duties were the primary focus...but what little free time the man did have was spent with such matters. Within a few years he was promoted to Primus Pilus, and eventually into Praefectus Castrorum. As praefectus, he spent most of his time organizing and drilling the legion. Being the third in command he had considerable weight upon his shoulders, but managed to stand tall despite them. Those below him respected him and many had fought alongside him at one point or another. It was only a matter of time until the man was named Legate, at the head of the Celeris Acuta.
