You're not getting a bollocking, the order was a tad vague, however it did ask you to [b]prevent the Carthaginian army from reaching Syracuse[/b], as opposed to defending the city, thereby allowing them to reach it. 

And the Consul certainly isn't going to confess to the Senate that he gave vague orders. 

Time to grab the shovel, and dig your way out of the impending scandal by not dying at Syracuse!
