Despite their popular image as cosmopolitan merchants, the Makhina are still only beginning a reluctant experiment with liberalism. Indeed, less than 100 years ago the planet was convulsed by a brutal civil war between Royalists and Populists whose scars are still healing. The result of the conflict was a victory for the Royalist party--however, the Queen, in an act of propitiation towards the still incensed populace, deigned to defer some part of her powers to a legislative body, which eventually became the Atlas Parliament. Their relationship remains uneasy, at best. The monarchy is an ancient and puissant tradition to the Yagbu species. Allegedly, the royal line is descended from Yuhanó, the son of the union between the goddess Yambalaç and the Blind-Wander-King, who led his disparate race in their shuffling across the dunes. Yuhanó purportedly cured the Yagbu of their blindness and was anointed as the King-Made-God. The royal traditional still smacks of ritual to the pious Yagbu, and the monarch is venerated as the vessel of the beneficence of Yambalaç. However, extensive contact with other worlds has cooled the fervor of most Yagbu, and the notion of God-King or God-Queen is one that is gradually, if surreptitiously, falling out of favor. The seat of government is the palace-city of Makhina, located in the more clement, and partially terraformed northern hemisphere of the planet. It is a planned city, designed around the celebration of the moons, which is the Yambalaçi aspect. The Lunar Fastness, thus, is the royal residence, and is said to be of a nigh unparalleled grandeur--though certainly the Emperor would wholeheartedly desist.
Description:
A small territorial power with far reaching commercial consequence, the USKM sits at a critical junction between Covenant space and Duchy territory. For centuries, the USKM has been known as a shrewd and successful trading power, their merchants creeping their way into every nook and cranny of the galaxy. Though it may not be a martial empire, the USKM has assuredly built a commercial hegemony in which all nations are fiefdoms. Despite the earnest warnings of its best military advisors, the USKM, however, has never insured this vast trade network with an equally puissant martial force. Their military is, at best, bare-bones; and the USKM, despite a past patchworked with internal conflict--vast planetary empires, subjugation, genocide--they are not desirous of territorial conquest. Rather, they use their voluminous wealth as an impetus for further commercial growth, as a means to fuel massive terraforming and industrial projects, and to bolster its trade fleet. The military, in the face of such things, is but a trifle. Thus, it fell rather easily to the invading All-Party force. In a manner of days, the force smashed the pitiful resistance of the USKM and walked past the threshold of the Lunar Fastness, capturing the Queen and her household in her apartments, and eventually consolidating the rest of the royal family and Parliament. In the eyes of the Yagbu, the transorganics had committed the ultimate sacrilege: stepped foot upon the hallowed sands of Makhina, the same ground upon which the lunar goddess Yambalaç had birthed Yuhanó from the seed of the Blind-Wander-King, where Huali had shaped their people from three grains of ozí rice--a privilege reserved only for members of the Yagbu race. Without out any other course, Queen Ámahaçal capitulated to Covenant occupation. However, the monarchy was restored by the Covenant, in an effort to make it appear to the outside that the USKM had joined the Covenant of their own volition and were providing subsidies to the war effort--an act of propaganda. The Covenant continues to control the UKSM as a puppet government, and maintains a large occupying force. They have consolidated Hanapa's Hanapa's shipyards, and all the while use the planet itself as a staging ground for their thrusts into Duchy space. However, surreptitiously, an underground resistance movement is beginning to be kindled, and soon will set the desert ablaze.
Capital Planet: Makhina A planet dominated by the endless Tchanu Desert, a vast expanse of dune, tableland, scrub, volcanic plain, tamarisk fields, and salt pan, unbroken save for shallow endorheic lakes, The planet is reserved for members of the Yagbu species only--trespass by foreigners is a heinous crime, punishable by death. Principal city is the eponymous metropolis and center of government, Makhina. Satellites: Inoké The largest of Makhina's two satellites, Inoké is the principal commercial mechanism for the USKM, serving as the port-of-call for all incoming and outbound trade vessels as well as the home of all non-Yagbu residents of the USKM. Other than Yagbu, Inoké has massive expatriate communities, mostly wealthy tradespeople and corporate moguls. Especially large is the community of augmented humans. The moon was heavily terraformed, making it overabundantly verdant and tropical. A number of foreign cultivars have been introduced to the moon to great success. The chief city, Isé-of-the-Waters, sits upon the titanic artificial Lake Bhampa, from which all of the moon's rivers draw their source. Hanapa A glorified lunar industrial complex, the engine which fuels the USKM trade enterprise. Gas and mineral mines, large manufacturing centers, shipyards, and even terraformed farm land dot its surface. Though the planet itself produces the lucrative and ubiquitous foodstuff of Makhins, ozí rice, without the larger scale operations of Hanapa, the commercial might of the USKM would have been nipped in the bud early on. Species: The Yagbu

Physiognomy: The Yagbu's outward physiognomy is surprisingly similar to human beings--however, their internal makeup differs greatly. Firstly, they have the remarkable capability of retaining water through a collection of four internal pouches called yama--an incredibly useful and obviously adaptive trait that allows them to thrive in a massive desert with scarcely any potable water sources. The glands of the yama collect the waters from any solid food sources that are consumed, and certainly from any liquids, processes them, and retains them. Studies have shown that, with a stable food source, the Yagbu could live their entire lifetimes without drinking a drop of water, and often do. Additionally, the incredibly smooth skin of the Yagbu does not excrete perspiration, retaining even more moisture. However, because of this, and despite their incredibly adaptations to their endemic climate, the Yagbu easily overheat. Thus, their dwellings are often deep underground. The Yagbu display sexual dimorphism, with the females having darker skin, lighter eyes, flatter ears, greater height, and generally rounder proportionality than their male counterparts. However, unlike other humanoid races, the Yagbu species has a third gender: makati . They are not totally sentient, but do definitively have Yagbu DNA. They are seen as life-givers, minor gods, and are venerated in shrines and temples. Yagbu males and females are naturally sterile, and require a third party, the makati, to fertilize the female ovum and the male sperm. The female, thus, does not bear the pains of childbirth often encountered in other humanoid species. Rather, the makati gestates and births the fetus--up to 10 at a time. [NEEDS MORE EXPLANATION. More on Yagbu biology, culture, history, society, and language, as well as an explanation of the Makhinas military, as well as some concept images to give you all an idea of how some of the locations appear (especially Inoke). However, I am just too tired tonight to finish this, but would like to put it out in the playing field and let you guys work with a little bit before I fill out more of the details and empty spaces in between. Sorry for the kind of truncated post but I hope that at least gives you an idea of the USKM and how you can work them into the setting.
