He was never fond of his criminal life style, but he made do with what he could to survive. Most teenagers who joined a gang in Ostia Martin would die within a few months due to the constant gang wars and famine, though Escher was the exception. He befriended a district priest, a servant of The light of Jalahandar. He would visit the priest for healing whenever he was wounded in street fights or run-ins with the city guard. The priests grew fond of Escher and saw him as a boy who could still make something of himself. They began preaching and training him in their ways. Through the priests of The Light of Jalahandar Escher learned his first spells in light magic and with his newly learned skills he became well known on the streets not only as a sufficient fighter but a valuable healer. At the age of twenty Escher knew he couldn't stay on the streets for the rest of his life. He was tired of healing children that he knew would just go out to hurt other children, who would then in turn need healing before going out and hurting even more. He was even tired of fighting in a gang war he knew was fruitless and would never end. He pondered a way out of this endless cycle until a particular flyer caught his eye. It was decorated with a large oak tree, on it was written "Greywood Company, The company needs you, join today!" The flyer had a crudely drawn map with an "X" marking the location of the company. Escher had heard of mercenary companies before, he had never thought of joining one though. He peeled the flyer off the wall and set off at a brisk pace, his head filled with excitement he hadn't felt since he stole his first meal.
