Our driving goal is to expand to the point where we can bring in more people and possibly become self-sufficient. Maybe even leave the Earth governments at that point (I would if it was real).
You can do both roles. We need Jacks(Jills)-of-all-trades in the colony, and won't have enough people or work for real specialization until the colonists get there.
