Trust me, read it before you watch the anime. The anime only covers a tiny sliver of the manga and leaves off so much that you'll only feel lost when you finish it. The movies are good, but again they're fairly recent and do not cover the full story, only the background of the main characters. Again, I've got to warn you, it can get into some really nasty stuff. If you think Attack on Titan is bad as far as ultraviolence, well...

[hider=Serious Spoilers]you haven't seen a guy cut his own arm off to get out of the maw of a demon crushing him while an entire army comprised of his friends gets violently slaughtered, eviscerated and eaten whole by nightmare creatures with human faces. Oh, and the demons are holding him down so he can be forced to watch the love of his life get violently raped by his dearest friend who betrayed him, his girlfriend and their entire army just so he can get a castle of his own. And a demon pokes out the guy's eye. And later on his girlfriend gives birth to a demon fetus baby with teleporting powers, and after being raped by monsters and her dear friend, has gone utterly insane, has forgotten everything about herself, and communicates through vocalizations.
