As soon as he finished writing on the board, Kido turned to face the class. "Okay, is everyone here? I'm going to get started, so anyone who's late will have to follow along as best as they can from when they arrive." Still nervous about this undertaking, he took a deep breath before addressing them all again. "Um, this class will be about poetry. I don't expect anyone to be able to write epics by the end, but hopefully this will help to give some insight about the various ways that language can be used to convey meaning beyond the most basic forms of communication." He looked around for a moment with a small smile. "In other words, this class is about using words effectively. This will be useful in studying literature and such. Now, I don't know how much about poetry anyone here knows, so, um...first, I want you to write down the name of a poem that you remember and what you understand about it. Even if it's something brief like 'it's a children's poem' or 'it's about two people who don't like each other,' that's fine. I'll walk around and collect the papers in a couple of minutes."
