I like this twist on the dudes not being useful tbh, lol. I couldn't care less that they get screen time just get their asses kicked. I wouldn't enjoy it in I watch, but it's different and I appreciate it for that. It's also interesting that the show applies the reverse (almost) Bechdel test. We've yet to see two men talk to each other about anything but a girl or girls unless they were fighting or demonstrating a negative male-male relationship. Examples that come to mind would be Sun talking to Neptune about Blake and Neptune and Jaune talking about Weiss. Or Jaune and Ren "talking" about girl problems. I find it fascinating and it's not something I expected to see with so many men working on the show.
I'd prefer all the characters be useful and contribute not only to the plot, but to the fight scenes that more or less make RWBY worth watching. I feel as though they butt monkey the male characters just so they can have the 'bragging rights' of being a show where their females are the dominant force because gurl powah is 'cool' nowadays and it 'breaks the norm' of female characters always being useless. The fact Ruby was like 'Oh fuck, we need back up, better call Jaune' does give me hope that Jaune's gotten stronger and his team will be useful for more than just 'lol hi im pyrrha get rekt' and the occasional Nora one liner though. Maybe everyone will be of use in the finale instead of Ruby mary sueing it up and soloing the final Grimm boss.
