A lich is someone, usually a wizard or king, who has learned a form of immortality which involves binding your soul to an object, or collecting the souls of others. In most lore they have control over the undead and magical powers. Voldemort was a type of lich: horcruxes were pieces of his soul so that he could remain even after his body perished.
