Lauren Smith Has no current nickname earned by peers Traded as Mary, no surname Born Lawrence Washburn Sold as a "slave of lust" when she was eight by a man named Edward Coates. The man saw potential in her when he passed her on the street one day, seeing her unusual eyes; one the color of moss, another of the earth. Her unusually feminine features made her easy to disguise as a young girl for a much larger profit. The seller had little to do with the actual dressing of Lauren, and only saw her once afterward; just as she was being sold. Lauren continued to dress as a girl since then so she wouldn't be found as easily by Edward once the buyer refused to pay (or at least that's what she says if anyone finds out she's physically a boy and she doesn't think they'll accept that she really is a girl anyway). Lawrence, as she was known at the time, had become very ill when she was younger, which actually changed a lot about her. Her metabolism became much faster, her body mass decreased, and facial features lost some masculinity (though this shows more now than it did on an already ambiguously-gendered five year old). She has started to take hormones, as well, so this is even more pronounced. One day, Lauren wishes to see her birth family again. For now, however, she is willing to ignore them and get her revenge on those who kidnapped and sold her. Lauren has a strong dislike of anyone who is average. She quickly loses interest in people if they're "boring" (what's boring changes a little bit over time, but not by much) and breaks off any type of relationship with them. Having no way of getting home, no form of identification, and no money, Lauren spent some time living in the streets of the city she was sold into. She had some assistance, and even stayed with an artist for a while (until they were evicted). Being young, it wasn't too hard for her to get food or money from people who felt sorry for her, especially when she told her story to them (leaving out that she was physically a boy, which worked, as her voice changed almost unnoticeably at puberty). Combined with an adorable Ukrainian accent, she could get almost anything from anyone who cared at all. Wanting to be self-sufficient, she almost always refused to live with anyone. She was adopted about two years ago by a couple too young to have a girl her age naturally. They went out of their way to get her good private tutoring to get her where she should be intellectually at her age, and also went through the necessary steps to get her on her way into becoming the girl she wanted to be in the first place. She was a quick learner, and they decided to send her into an actual school this year. Had she not started out looking somewhat feminine already, she would probably still look like a boy. As she is, though, it's difficult to tell she's not physically a girl. Lauren believes that fate is nothing but a fancy word for "unexplained cause and effect relationships", believing that everything happens as a result of something else. The belief to her seems far more structured than "Everything happens for a reason", "God works in mysterious ways", or any other similar statement. She does follow a system of beliefs that revolves around this philosophy and manipulating probability in her favor. Her recently-developed powers she believes are a "divine" gift, allowing her to be the puppeteer of the Great Chaos and the one and only priestess of a forgotten deity. That isn't to say she's egotistical, just that she believes even the smallest action can snowball into a world war, and if that is to happen, she wants to be the one to start it. She misdirects everyone else's senses around her unless she wants to be noticed. The effect is somewhat like seeing something in the corner of your eye, but when you look, it's not there. Once someone knows how her power works, it doesn't affect them anymore. Even those that can perceive her while incognito find it incredibly difficult to focus on her for any length of time and if they stop paying attention, can forget she's still there. She developed this power soon after she started hormone therapy, so she can't always control it yet, though thankfully it only turns on when she doesn't want it on and not off when does.
