The borrowers simply borrow things to live. They borrow cloths to make clothes, sugar cubes and small bits of food, stuff like that. They really only borrow what they need.
The old lady secretly knows about the borrowers, but she doesn't say anything! I was thinking that if anyone wanted their characters to be the curious one, they could do that~ 
(But you should totally watch the movie it's extremely good)
