It doesn't have to be a situation where the characters are tied down by ethnicity and so forth. While that is an option, it's allowable to be a little more diverse about the magical abilities. 

I don't consider mythologies off-limits, nor should a character be bound by mythologies, so much as I simply want to emphasize the mystical over say, mutant superpowers.
