Tiny amounts of tension was applied to his muscles instead, and while any seeing creature would see absolutely nothing different unless they were specifically looking for it, they would not have noticed. With mass detection, it's a little easier to detect, and both of his companions both noticed, and reacted the same way. In many cases, the Tinkerer's actions influenced his followers around him; they were the leaders, after all.
