There's two parts to NVA shoulder boards. There's the rank insigna, and the [i][url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corps_colours_%28NPA%29]Waffenfarbe[/url][/i], which is the coloured trim that denotes the wearer's branch of service.

Strictly speaking the board should look more like this, since KSK-18 (NVA combat swimmers) was part of the [i]Volksmarine[/i]:
