RUNES!!!! Runes is the magic base. Oh, wait a minute... HELLO!!!! I am Crimson, and I am Blaze's co... something. I don't fucking know. Anyways. Runes. Okay... how to explain... hang on. Let me find my original post I put... somewhere.... Well, fuckberries, I can't find it. THE HELL WITH IT!!! Basically, runes are the language of the angels written down for man at the beginning of creation. Due to them being of an ethereal nature, if one were to write a rune (known as scribing), one can manipulate whatever word they wrote down. For example. If one were to scribe the rune for "Fire" one can then summon fire, although you do have kinda specific. You want a fireball, you have to scribe both "Fire" and "Ball" together to make "Fireball". It works like Japanese Kanji. Each character is a base word. You can combine words to make other words to change the effect. For example, combine "Right", "Hand", "Fire" and "Ball" to summon a fireball into your right hand. Or you can do "Fire" "Ball" "Forward" to launch a fireball in an arc in the direction you're aiming. "Fire" "Ball" "Shoot" "Curve" "Left" shoots a fireball like a gun, but curves to the left. As you can imagine, holy fuck, things can get epic. However this was an arduous process. Until, people realized they could carve runes into objects permanently. Like "Lightning" onto a sword. Then they started tattooing onto their bodies. By this point in time, master scribers (or prodigies) can just scribe into the air itself. Oh, yeah. If a rune is damaged, it's effect can either stop or be altered, depending on if a new rune is made from the damage. So there is a risk with getting close to an enemy. Because of this, Rune warriors don't really rely on martial arts, kinda making it a bit more like a lost art, or hobby-type thing (like swordplay today) I also had this idea about how 4 clans basically run things using specialized runes. They are the Byakko (speed and wind-based), Suzaku (aerial and fire-based), Seiryu (power and water-based), and Genbu (defense and earth-based) clans (yes, I based them of the Japanese cardinal guardians with a bit of Avatar. I don't care). We probably need to streamline this, but that's basically how it goes. Oh! And Blaze? Can I bring in the Crystonians? Every fantasy needs some kind of inhuman species.
