How many people of the 21st century dreamed of living long enough to experience the feeling of a world that wasn't their own, striving off into a pixelated realm of data to seek their fame and fortune? Yet, as all dreams went, it stayed merely a fantasy, and the many millions that hoped to one day wield two swords and find their lover in an online VR game would never do so. Yet, as those unfortunates laid on their deathbeds, their hopes were passed on to the next generation. Virtual reality, though it had start prototyping in the 21st century, only truly reached commercial usage in the 22nd century. With the first virtual reality machines created and marketed by the Chinese tech giant Lenovo, spurred on by it's acquisition of Nintendo and Apple in the late 21st century, the reality of VR machines brought forth a massive boom in the gaming industry, and an even larger one in the areas of ethics and politics. Due to such political issues as the legality of actions in-game and the possibility of severe gaming addiction ruining lives just as easily as drugs, the first games available were single-player sports or educational games. Needless to say, enthusiasts were displeased and the first petition for action games soon passed through the internet, reaching an astounding number of two billion votes before the UN finally let it pass. And from there, the flood of single-player virtual reality games was unleashed. It was looking like the 22nd century was reached its peak in terms of gaming, but then, an announcement with massive repurcussions was made. The creation of a virtual reality MMO, on a global scale. On December 25, 2108, an unknown Canadian company, in collaboration with Lenovo and Sega-Atlas made a Kickstarter project that promised the creation of a virtual reality MMO, with powerful enough servers that there wouldn't be any lag, even at a global level. A hundred random donors would be given beta keys for the first test phase next year, and that was all that was needed for that company to reach it's goal of fifty million dollars within an hour. In a single month, the company had raised an astronomical amount of money to put into the game. The world waited with a bated breath the following year, as one hundred players were allowed access to the game, and even allowed to post impressions of it. But those reviews only came a month afterwards, with almost all the players spending all their available free time playing. The hype increased, and two years later, it was finally released. On that autumn day, ten million lucky players became the first to access the first VRMMO on a global-scale. The Threshold of Kakophonia.
The open blue sky, the vast green expanse, the warm feeling of the sun shining down on your face. It's hard to believe that a place like this is just artificially created, solely for the purpose of slaying monsters for experience. The coastal plains of Kakophonia, are, to some, considered paradise, the perfect world seen in many vacation ads. But the beauty of this world is not alone in the atmospheric landscapes and virtual manipulation of the senses, as every world has it's purpose. Kakophonia's destiny is to be the playground of over ten-million players worldwide, to test their skills, abilities, and experience in this new horizon. From the icy norths, to the barren south, every zone decorating this uncharted world has mysteries waiting to be solved and hidden secrets waiting to be found. We the players shall utilize to the best of our ability a way to obtain this knowledge and conquer this world's challenges.
Races
Official Lore - The Veni Yan are a race of mysterious tattooed humanoids with ties to the spirits of the natural world. The runic glyphs marking their bodies both further their magical prowess as they age and advance their connection with the unseen realm. Most of the glyphs, though, remain invisible to the eye up till the point the Veni Yan utilize magic, in which the glyphs then seemingly 'grow' all over their body. They, as a whole, are a humble people who need not the technological advances of the other races to live comfortably, instead choosing to relate themselves to and strenthen their bond with Gaia. Player – Choosing the Veni Yan race grants access to one of three archetypes; inquisitor, monk, or acolyte. Among these classes, the player will harness mana, a resource that regenerates when the player is stationary, which can then be used to call upon the deities they worship. This grants elemental power and boons upon themselves, and those around them, allowing Veni Yan to perform both offensively and supportively. The Veni Yan’s runic tattoos are unseen out of combat, but when they are activated, they grant increases to certain stats. Upon character creation, players are able to choose the shape and form of their runic glyphs.

Official Lore - The Humans are the most populous race among this world, inhabiting every settlement and having the most influence. They are a strong people of both mind and body, but do not have the sharp minds of the Nobelle nor the magical aptitude of the Veni Yan. Humans are what makes the economy thrive and are the governing power of the cities, being the main labor force for almost every industry or market. Player - Choosing the Human race grants access to one of three classes; gunslinger, warrior, or martial artist. Among these classes the player will harness ki, an energy resource within the body that regenerates passively regardless of conditions, though at a slower pace than mana. Using this Ki, they can enhance their physical prowess, or channel this energy through their body to emit attack of pure power at their enemy. Humans are also the only race that is capable of increasing their base stats at their will, allowing them to go along any stat build that they wish, whereas the Veni Yan and the Nobelle both have no control over their stat growth.

Official Lore- The Nobelle are a proud race of small statured geniuses, almost always pale-skinned with a crystal present on a certain part of their body. Known as the harbingers of almost every technological advancement in the world, they are well respected and possess many illustrious achievements in every craftsmanship known. As a whole though, they bicker amongst one another, and are stubborn when pursuing their goals. But their strengths greatly outweigh their weaknesses and the assistance of a Nobelle is not something to turn down. Player – Choosing the Nobelle race grants access to one of three classes; augmenter, mechanic, and alchemist. Using technological wonders, they are cooldown based fighters wielding utility and strength with their creations. The most notable trait of Nobelles is the fact that they are able to swap weapons while in combat due to a quick swap weapon slot, allowing them to maximize damage potential as the situation demands by changing the weapon they are currently utilizing. Nobelle are also embedded with the ability to Overclock, allowing them to maximize their potential, increasing the strength of their abilities and stats in exchange for lowered defenses that will risk their naturally low HP. Overclocking multiple times to continually increase stats must be done carefully as the player will overheat after a certain threshold and damage the character itself.
Combat
Melee combat is fairly straight forward, just kinetic motion that causes a certain amount of damage dependent on the speed of your attacks and the damage value of your weapon. It is a fairly realistic system with only one disrespectancy from reality: super armor. In the activation of all melee spells that consume ki or mana, the user gains super armor, which makes it so that they can not flinch during the activation of the spell. Only a few special spells can completely negate the activation of a melee spell, namely binds and counters, the former cancelling by binding movement and the latter forcing the attack to stop due to it being deflected. It should be noted that the Augmentors of the Nobelle race do not have super armor during the performance of their melee spells, and instead have 0.2 seconds of intangibility at the instant that they switch weapons from their quick slot. In terms of damage, it is generally agreed upon that it goes from hammer to axe to sword to fist, though as many veterans would agree, damage does not equal effectiveness.

Ranged combat, that is, the usage of guns, spears, bows, or any variation inbetween, requires neither ki nor mana to use, making it a prime long-range projectile choice for those who do not wish to spend their MP on spells to attack from a distance. However, this non-magical property would also equate to the chance of the projectile missing, as it must be aimed. Furthermore, each ranged weapon has a cooldown, so while it isn't a spell, it still 'acts' as one, with a cooldown dependant on its enhancements and it's type. The majority of Ranged weapons are linear, but there are a few unique weapons with homing properties. From strongest to weakest, Ranged weapons go from guns to spears to crossbows to bows, though most have noted that the differences in damage between gun and spear is marginal.

Magical combat is separated largely into two categories: elemental and pure. The Veni Yan use elemental magic, utilizing one-lin incantations to the spirits in order to bring forth the elements into their control, striking down their enemies with the fury of nature. However, this elemental magic both consumes a large amount of mana along with certain spells being ineffective against monsters with specific elemental resistances. On the other hand, pure magical spells, utilized through ki, deal non-elemental magical damage, as well as having relatively lower ki costs. This creates a consistent source of magical DPS, unaffected by elemental resistances, but situationally weaker than mana-driven spells. The Nobelle, unable to use magic or ki, instead utilize the power of science, allowing them to craft explosive concoction that deal pure elemental damage, without any of the magical components. Given time and preparation, it is very easy for an Alchemist to temporarily outdamage the combined power of a Martial Artist and an Acolyte. Though the numerous different spell multipliers and effects of Magical weapons throw all rankings of general damage up in the air, it's generally agreed upon that Grimoires provide the most straight up damage. An interesting thing to note is that if an Acolyte fights without a weapon, they are capable of casting two spells simultaneously.

Crafting Guilds - The Crafting Guilds are economic power houses of Kakophonia, players grinding hard time money and resources into creating items to turn a profit. Player mercantile is fairly common, more so than one would think; being that players who enjoy playing the game require items to progress, and as you gain more and more wealth, the influence you have also increases. Crafting Guilds are often intertwined with one another, as they trade goods to benefit each other- but there also cases where rival guilds bribe players to boycott others into bankruptcy. In the end Crafting Guilds are the safest guilds to join, as they require little no combat and can generate slow but steady amounts of experience. Exploration Guilds - The Exploration Guilds are the brave and the bold of Kakophonia, challenging every dungeon and travelling unknown lands to discover the secrets of the world. Often originating as just a small guild composed of few players, highly respected and famous Explorations Guilds arguably possess the players with the highest ingame experience and combat skill. Union Guild - Union Guilds are juggernauts of Kakophonia, filled with hardcore players who relish in being superior to others. Gaining influence and power via hardcore grinding andpower-leveling, they rise in power quickly and claim the land and towns for themselves. Union Guilds hold the largest amount of power among the three types of guilds, having the ability to claim a town as their own for a large sum of gold, and the ability to set rules and taxes within those towns.
Crafting The crafting system within the game is very unique, and often regarded as fun to profession junkies. Experience is gained through creating a ‘good’, and eventually you gain levels and are able to create larger or more intricate goods with higher level materials. This ultimately leads to your skill 'capping', in which the creation of a 'masterpiece' will be needed to progress in the trade. Masterpieces grant more experience and gain the player a skill point to use in their trade, learning to craft unique items of their own design. Many players choose to take the crafting route as it is a less stressful way to level than hunting monsters, although not faster. Skill System The skill system within the game is its core feature and appeal. There are a countless amount of skills scattered across the world, waiting to be obtained by players through an even larger amount of quests, events, and other methods. Each skill is unique in acquisition and effect, furthermore, many can be obtained over-time for the player to become stronger and realize the skill tree that they actually want. Skills are freely obtainable by any player, with important ones being blatantly easy, while others being nearly impossible to find or complete. Non-Player Characters In Kakophonia there are many different types of people, with different personalities, voices, histories, and other self-defining characteristics. One might confuse these traits for those of the players of this game, but this is not the case, as the NPCs of this game of high enough intelligence that the differences between NPCs and humans seem almost non-existent. Each have their own stories to tell, their own hopes and dreams, making them an oddity unique to this game- and a very accepted and liked oddity at that.
