Name: Mathias Skye Age: 32 Gender: Male Faction/Allegiance: Order of Ildris - Inquisitors of Kalnach Branch Relic Description: Seraphim - A simple looking cloak that actually can turn into a large pair of leathery wings. It grants Mathias weightlessness despite what his load may be, which helps him use the wings to fly. However the weightlessness is not constant; it drains Mathias of his stamina rather quickly, though eating a lot of food seems to help migitate the strain. The can be folden to a fairly compact form on his back resembling a cloak, and it's main useage when flying isn't actually to lift him off but to help manuver him through the air. Appearance: Outside of his armor Mathias is dark-skinned and covered in old burn scars. Mostly around his upper body, though most aren't so harsh any more and just look like strange fleshy tissue. Mathis himself is rather plain looking, but has a suitable muscture for someone who is a knight; robust shoulders, strong legs, a firm paunch with a good layer of fat for energy and insolation. Mathias is a blond however he typically shaves himself bald and keeps no facial hair. His back has a detailed tattoo of the Order of Ildris, to showcase his loyalty and dedication to them. Flaws: Fervent Beleiver Of Ildris: Mathias may use an acursed Relic, but he still holds faith to the Order of Ildris and follows their commandments. Which means that if he discovers that someone possess a Relic, he would have no hesitation to slaying them as soon as possible, for the good of the world in his mind. Chronic Heroics: Mathias would be a good Inqusitor if he stopped worry about the wellbeing of others and more about destorying Relics. Mathias often uses his power to help the needy however he can, regardless if he has better things to do. He has a hard time turning away from those who ask for his assistance. Even those possesing Relics may gain his help if they are smart enough to keep their secret from him or if he simply feels sorry for you (Which he tends to do for most people he has to kill). Emotional: Mathias is not a stoic man. He wears his emotions openly, and because of it it's quite easy to provoke him. He'll weep when he hears of a sad tale and feel furious when he see's injustice. While not gullible, he can be blinded by his own emotions, just as he can be empowered by them. Simple-Minded: Complicated plots tends to go over Mathias. He's not really one for schemeing or poilitics, and he tends to do badly in teamwork excircises due to his difficulty in trying to cooridinate with others. When dealing with puzzles he tends to go for the simplest solution, and if failing that, applying force until the problem is no longer an issue. Fears Fire: Due to trumatic experience in the past, Mathias tends to get really uneasy around fire, even candles. The Inquisition made him get over the worse of it, but he still keeps his distances from any open flame and will be very panicky if he finds himself sorrounded by fire. Skills: Knightly Combat: Mathias is skilled in the use of a Lance, Sword (With or without a shield) and a crossbow. He's also fairly decent in hand-to-hand combat, though he's more of a grappler than a brawler. Horse Rider: Mathias is also trained in riding horses and some other mounts, though he's best with horses. He's just as efficient in combat while mounted as he is on foot, if not more so as he favors couching his lance when he is on horse bacl. Agile: Grace and speed may not be expected for a man donned in armor, but Mathias is still very agile, at least for a man in armor. To put into example: Mathias can swim through a river while in fully armored. Even in combat he does not simply bash himself against his opponent, but would try to outmanuver and strike them quickly when it would matter than to waste energy trying to put his full force against his opponents strongest defense. Enduring: Mathias is capable of handling both a physical and mental burden, perhaps not with ease, but with great tolerance. Physically Mathias can wear his armor for days on end without succumbing to fatigue as quickly as others would, which is greatly helpful after using the Seraphim as anyone else would collapse in exhaustion. Mentally Mathias uses his unwavering faith and foolish fearlessness to withstand torture and insanity. Mathias may not be one of the strongest warriors, but he likes to think that he's one of the toughest. Educated: Despite Mathias's simple-mindedness, he is well-read and even knows a few languages outside of the trade tongue. If he was not a knight or could somehow retire, he could actually do a decent job as an herbalist or even a physician. Mathias at least knows how to keep himself healthy and fit for fighting. Biography: Mathias Skye was brought into an orphanage when he was only six years old. Though he doesn't remember all the details himself, his family's farm was burned to the ground by Relic-armed bandits. Mathias himself was only saved due to shear luck: guards came to put out the fire and found Mathias underneath the burnt corpse of his mother, who either tried to save him by shielding him from the flames or simply fell on top of him when she was stabbed by the chandaler. Either way, he was brought to an orphanage hosted by the Order of Ildris, and that was where he first started his path into the Inqusition. Mathias had very few friends in the orphanage due to his sever burns, but he had one who at least was willing to tolerate him. This person was Akiha; a boy around Mathias age who, for some reason or another, was abandoned by his parents. Akiha wasn't the nicest orphan, but he watched out for Mathias and the two grew insepertable. Much of their childhood consisted of listening to the preaching of Ildris and Akiha telling stories. It was these stories that shaped Mathias. Being children, neither of the boys really understood the tennants that the Order tried to instil into them. Mathias didn't know better so he agreed with them, but Akiha only did so because he knew that if he did not, he would get intro trouble. When Mathias wanted to really know more about the teachings, he would ask Akiha, and he would than explain it to Mathias in his own way. In a sense, they were a bit more "fantasy" than what the Order would give, but Mathias liked Akiha's better. Following his tales of religious heroes, Mathias began to act like these mythical creations Akiha had made up. Mathias fought against "The evils" brought about from using Relics, such as vicious children and mean-spirited youths. Mathias gained a few more scars for his troubles, but he didn't let his injuries stop him from fighting for his beleif. Neither of the two boys were ever adopted by a family, and eventually found themselves in Order of Ildris as Church Militants. And despite their orphan status, both boys were more capable than their upbringing would imply. Mathias was always a good child in the orphanage and for it he was fed well, and because he ate well he grew big. Not the largest of men, but certainly taller and stronger than most. While unskilled, when it came to physical challenges Mathias had very little trouble passing them. Akiha was cunning and much better educated than he should be. He would use his sneaky ability to read informational text to Mathias, teaching him as he learned. Despite that, both were made into initiates of the Ildris, and no one really expected them to be much use beyond mere fodder. But Akiha had other plans. By the time they had become young adults, Akiha knew of the Inqusition of Kalnach. Akiha didn't want him or Mathias to become arrow bait for a few relic-wielding insurgents, so he began to devise a plan to get the Inqusition's attention. And that was to start scheming himself. Mathias was a mere pawn in Akiha's plan; at some point it didn't even matter if his best friend had lived or died, but thanks to Mathias' own toughness, dying was difficult to acheive. Akiha's plan, which was to start a rumor of an unclaimed relic, soon turned into a veritable gold mind as many relic hunters gathered to get this unclaimed object of power. Than Akiha had Mathias assist him in capturing these Relic Hunters, isolating those who have relics and simply killing the ones who don't. Mathis never knew the details, only those who needed to be captured and those who had to die. Mathias himself showed his ability taking down the group of Relic Hunters with nothing but his club and dressed in rough leather. Once the group had been subdued, Akiha took the prisoners to a man with connections to the Inqusition of Ildris. By spinning an amazing tale and having the physical evidence to back up his claims, both of the boys were taken into the Inquistion. Mathias, all the while, simply did as he was told, but also took the time to make use of the opprotunities Akiha made for him. Such as convincing some of the captured Relic Hunters to join them in the Inqusition. Mathias simply retold tales of the Order of Ildris like Akiha had told him, made a few vague hints about what would happen if they did not comply, and he managed to get at least a fourth of the group to swear loyalty to the Inqusition. Mathias never knew what happened to the others. Once in the Inqusition both Mathias and Akiha where elevated gained much more power than they had ever had before. Akiha was no longer a mere footsoldier, but his expertise was put into work organizing and leading small groups of Inqusitors. Mathias was given tougher training as a knight, taught their ways of combat and culture. Mathias was only twenty when this happened, and it was only the beginning of bigger things. For about three years Mathias trained as a knight. He picked up combat fairly well for himself, but honed most of his skills not training but actually hunting down relic users. Akiha was always with him to hunt down the relic users, but also out of familiarity. Akiha always held a soft spot for his old friend, and Mathias cherished Akiha for his loyalty. Together the two were quite a force; Akiha had learned the ways of the Kalnachi longbowmen and Mathias was a force of nature behind a lance while on a horse. There was very few things most mere relic users could do against them with Akiha's mind and Mathias's skill. And Akiha aimed to ensure that remained. One day after Akiha had managed to get a promotion, he had brought Mithais to the old orphanage they once grew up in. There Akiha was with a few others and told Mathias why he had brought him here; Mathias was to don a Relic and use it to extend the interests of the Inqusition. Initiall Mathias was shocked. Relics were the root of all evil, or so he was raised to beleive. But Akiha told him that it was a nessisary evil that needed to be used for the greater good. Akiha claimed that the Inqusition told Akiha to equip someone with the relic, and Akiha could only trust Mathias to use it for good. Mathias may not trust Relics, but he trusted Akiha. So he donned what looked like a leather cloak, and chose to take on the burden of it's sin. The effects of the cloak did not make itself apparent until a year later. The cloak had shifted into a pair of leathery wings which, initially, made Mathias very frightful. But with Akiha's soothing words and tales of "Angels", Mathias accepted the wings for what they were. He was, as Akiha described it, a "Fallen Angel" who despite being casted away from the heavens, would continue to serve his god until he may redeem himself in death, or continue to serve in the afterlife. Mathias spent the rest of his years mastering the relic he calls the Seraphim as he had accepted the damnation and wanted to use what was left of his life making the world a better place, one death at a time. Personality/motivation: Mathias always wanted to be a hero. He wants to see himself as a beacon of good and someone that people could rely on in hard times. He wants this because he see's the world as a bleak and unfulfilling place; heroes existed only in tales and in reality all that Mathias seemed to meet are monsters of different levels of vileness. Even his own best friend Akiha, is twisted in ways that Mathias is more than aware of. He even knows that the Order of Ildris that he holds so dear is not the paragon of perfection as it's tennants would claim it to be, but for Mathias the alternative is much worse. As a man of faith, he cares more for what the Order of Ildris represents rather than the actions they preform. Mathias is a cynic who wants to be a romantic. For all the evil and dispair in the world, he does not want to give in, but finds a certain purpose in fighting back, even though he will be defeated regardless. His attempt at a gallant imagery helps hide and forget the darkness that hides underneath his armor, and he hopes that it could inspire others to do the same. He wants to make the world a better place the only way he knows how. Relations: Akiha, his only friend and a fellow member of the Inqusition. Akiha has a fairly high position in the Inqusition's chain of command, though he's still expected to work in the feild. He's the one who paid for all of Mathias's equipment and looks out for his only friend. Final Point - Secrets: Mathias is a homosexual. He had admitted his feelings to Akiha before, but Akiha did not recuperate. They're still friends. Mathias has told no one else and does not show affection to either genders, in private or openly.
