He became involved with gangs and criminal activity, at first only to stay alive but later to prosper. He fought who he was told to, whether it was to harm or intimidate someone or for someone else's entertainment and he became very good at it. Despite this, he still commonly got hurt and, combined with frustration at his own low morals, he decided that he needed to get out and away from gangs and criminals. When the war happened he got his wish at a serious price.
