There were greyer Jedi, especially thanks to the event that was the Clone Wars.Even before there were some who played it a lot looser with the Jedi Code e.g. Qui Gon. So yes, as long as you don't completely ignore every aspect of being a Jedi :P
I like to play as characters who at least share a little bit of my own perspective on things. I've never really agreed on some of the ideals of the Jedi Order from a real-life perspective, and was more in agreement with people like Jinn and even Skywalker. I wouldn't outright turn on them and slaughter the younglings like Anakin did. Therefore, my Jedi would have been in the Order but once he became a Knight he 'resigned' from it because he couldn't bring himself to fight for something he did not agree with, nor could the Jedi Order allow someone in their ranks who would not abide by their code. Thus, he becomes a Gray Jedi - someone who walks the line between both sides of the Force. I suppose the Republic/Empire would be hunting down any Jedi who posed a threat, yes? My Gray Jedi would be in the records at the Jedi Temple, and I am sure Palpatine would send someone to find him. Also, I have questions in A Grim Hope if you're interested in answering those.
