The main direction I have for making Shikamaru different isn't so much as a drastic shift in personality as it is changing where he ends up once the Rookie Nine start to find their respective roles in the ninja world. 

One thing I'd personally like to avoid doing is elevating supporting characters to a sort of main cast role, if that makes any sense at all. Granted, more screen-time is always good. The main idea I have is Shikamaru ending up as an ANBU (or heaven forbid, Root) agent, whhere his prodigial intellect can be utilized to its full extent while also giving him important plot stuff to do without making him heavily involved with the conflicts of the main characters; think as if he'd be gathering intelligence on the Akatsuki or some-such that ends up helping Naruto or some-such not get killed. Dunno', it honestly depends on how the RP goes.

I think it should come as no surprise that his ANBU mask/code-name would be Deer. Because I'm hilarious and understand naming conventions.
