I'm generally ok with both things you mentioned. As long as your character feels some emotion during an emotional event or maybe just calms down with the jokes then it should be fine. Magic is allowed but it would depend upon the definition. It won't be like other things were you have a spell for every job under the sun but more elemental powers!
