But how long a game should be vs how long it is very very much depends on the genre, the story (If there is one), and what's trying to be conveyed. A short game can convey as much as a long game if it's done right. And I've found most developers these days are "Levels = RPG, done". With exceptions. Imo, an rpg requires story that involves the player directly and has some form of player choice. A la Fallout (Dunno about all of them, only seen 3 and played New Vegas). Skyrim (Dunno about the other Elder Scrolls games) less so because it 'ends' in only one way. But that's mostly just looking at modern AAA "RPGs" and personal speculation/opinion.
