But why didn't one just destroy the bridge? Mining explosives, even primitive ones, certainly exist at this point in time, so blowing the bridge isn't that hard. Plus, a mage can do that easier. The bridge is very strategic- holding them at the bridge is much wiser, more so if your people have especially skilled archers.
