His father, Hasegawa Niiro, served Daimyo Matsudaira Ietada, until both were slain during the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Ietada's successor, Tadayoshi, soon adopted Kiyohide out of respect for Niiro's service. He became Matsudaira Tadayoshi's page for several years. As an educated scholar, Tadayoshi taught Kiyohide many things; Calligraphy, war strategy, and politics, to name a few. At the age of 16, Kiyohide became a Tsukaiban (battlefield messenger/courier) for the Matsudaira army. Many of his campaigns were spent eradicating rival clans that rebelled against the Shogunate. Even though he rarely fought in battle, he proved to be an invaluable asset in the war effort as an information gatherer. Matsudaira Todayoshi died on Kiyohide's 20th birthday. It was the same day Kiyohide was handpicked by Roju * Honda Masazumi for an investigation at Tsushima-Fuchu Domain**. He was tasked with gathering information on multiple targets, operating unofficially as a Metsuke agent. Officially, he was publicly viewed as an emissary of the Shogunate. Because he represented a higher authority, one that superseded the provincial Daimyo, he was often asked to mediate disputes; upholding justice, befitting of Shogunate law. Four years later, Kiyohide had a breakthrough in one of his investigations. After compiling enough evidence, he returned to Edo and presented his findings to Honda Masazumi. It was revealed to the Roju that Daimyo So Katsuyama was conspiring with foreign traders; They had sabotaged trade ship routes for years, pirating goods from foreign naval vessels. Through careful orchestration, So Katsuyama and the unidentified foreigners, manipulated the western shores of Japan's naval trade system for profit. Though Kiyohide was handsomely rewarded for his efforts, he was denied his station back in Tsushima for undisclosed reasons. He felt compelled to finish the investigation he started, but Honda Masazumi had other plans in mind. Much to his reluctance, Kiyohide was reassigned to a case involving the assassination of several political figure heads. Also designated to the task was (your character), Kiyohide's newly appointed partner. Three years later, with over thirty cases solved, the suspects behind the political assassinations are still at large. Kiyohide hopes to find new leads in their next assignment at Osaka. * highest ranking government official, 2nd to the Shogun ** Island off in the far west, known as a hub for foreign trade.
