I would assume so. We're essentially going to be hitting hard enough to kill or incapacitate, except people don't die because of magic.

A foil would probably be too thin to pierce through most metal armor, and would just crumple or, more likely, be deflected instead. Against softer armor like leather or the like, it would probably be pretty darn effective.
