The concept is that if water has various forms, by manipulating the magic and element itself which the dragon or dragon slayer has control over, they should be able to access those other variations. 

If it's necessary delving deeper into Azuron's past could possibly also be a cause of this magic change as he was essentially brought back to life and experimented on and studied. That

I just thought it was new. I hadn't seen it done and figured it was pretty cool TT__TT And left room for growth and other possibilities.

Well it was during the fight with Hades. Laxus transferred his magic to Natsu and proceeded to tank the ultra powerful attack without any magic or protection and the gift gave birth to the Lightning Flame Dragon XD
