As Gisk said, Garruk was cursed by the Chain Veil, which was slowly turning him into a demon. This is the same thing that happened to Ob Nixilis. However, with the events of DotP 2k15, he's had a hedron shoved in his chest, which has halted the advance of the curse. Now he's just an asshole.

Anyway, similar colors are fine, as long as your characters are different enough. Please try to keep color philosophy in mind when deciding your character's race, background and personality.
