5th Year looks to be too high tier for your characters' skillset. Don't know if Vari kept it in my notes, but basically third to fourth and fourth to fifth are increasingly difficult tests of combat power, and lots of people repeat the third year because they simply aren't powerful enough to get into fourth, which has the highest death toll of all the years. I'd peg him more as a third or fourth year.

Basically your race is weird when we have a dragon that maintains a human form while being a normal dragon. Not to mention that it's weird from a biological standpoint too, but that's beside the point. All you really have to do is make him a full-blooded one-horn  and that'd rid of most of the complications I see.
