1) New year or death, which ever comes first. Alternatively you could send in a request form, but that guarantees nothing
2) Pairs. After all, just because you have the ability to go solo in theory, doesn't mean you should. Of course, this varies depending on the opposition. Sending in 4 Gatekeepers to clear out a small den of wild animals is probably overkill, while deciding to take on a whole dungeon of boss-tier enemies by oneself is stupidly overconfident.
