Accel World is not a Giant mecha anime...
It's about a virtual reality fighting game in which the characters take the form of dual avatars which are usually human sized/shaped with some more animal features each having special design, color, appearances and abilities chosen by the game based on their deepest fears and insecurities. 
More or less something like that XD
I mean I guess you could call it virtual reality... It's kinda that, but the game is like... it's own thing. If you lose too much or like all your points or something it erases itself and all memories involving it from the users device which is generally connected to the mind. I mean it's called a Neurolinker so yeah XD
