Kijani nodded to him, trying and failing to smile. He was reading her, and she couldn't mask her pain. "Connor, I- I know you've been watching and waiting so patiently for me to... to talk." She tried to keep her hands from shaking, and locked them behind her back. "I feel that I can't, because of... well, I know good and well how deeply you love me. You say you would do anything for me, and I believe you. That's why I don't tell you everything, because I wouldn't want you fighting for me, because you would not win that fight!" She was trying to keep the tears from her eyes, and her throat from closing.

"...I love you, Connor. I truly, deeply do, and I realize that now." She inhaled. Exhaled. Spoke. "That's why I-- I can't be with you. Where I'm going, you can't follow. I refuse to let you, because I love you enough to realize that-" It was failing, there were tears starting to slide down her cheeks. "I will ruin your life, Connor. I won't repay your love with..." She shook her head, the words failing.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I know you don't understand, but one day, perhaps--" Her throat closed and she started to cry, covering her face.
