Sam was grateful when Jessica changed the subject. In fact, she was grateful that Jessica didn't fret about how Sam was not only a school dropout, but a [i]runaway[/i] as well. 

"Yeah, I'm quite hungry," Sam said, returning her gaze to her book. "I mean, I snacked a little when you were both out, but I'm still quite hungry." She glanced over at Jasmine again when the other girl was talking about school dinners before looking back down at her book. "School food is bad by design," she commented. "The school is more concerned about the quantity of food rather than the quality." She shook her head slightly before turning the next page of her book.
