Understandable, but here's my big thing. I'll still do it if you really want, but this is what I've noticed with my characters. I make a better background in game, when I have to tell someone. 
That and I don't like making big characters I tend to fade into the background but I play a character who isn't meant to be special, he's just there and keeps pace with everyone. I can hold my own, but I aint special.

I just don't want anyone to seem OP by allowing them a gang at their disposal,  but if they stay in their base that should be fine

I think I'm involved with this as it's about my character, so I'll try to clear up some of the stuff about her. She's indeed a Scholar type character(Hence her occupation) and she is themed toward being better at meta physics/theory of magic rather than the practice(as she is still learning how to master spell casting) at least in non prepared settings.

Your character seems fine,  though the Black Book thing makes me curious.  Foes she carry it with her also did she gain anything from using it
