Basic Details about The Republic: As for the Res Publica, well, basically, their origins come from a political theorist from the University of Cyrodiil, Antonio Salutati, who was a teacher in said university during the Great War, and managed to avoid being slaughtered by the Aldmeri Dominion's armies during the sack of the Imperial City, said sack being caused by Titus Mede's decision to abandon his capital, a decision which, although it made military sense, still left said capital to the Aldmeri Dominion. Salutati was left radicalized against the idea of Monarchy by that move, feeling that the exercise of such arbitary power was what allowed the city to be abandoned in the first place. Salutati's views were further steeled when the Imperials retook the Imperial City, and the White-Gold Concordat was signed, as well as taxes raised in order to pay for rebuilding and rearming. And, so, he wrote a book called the Res Publica, advocating for the type of government run by the Merchant and Artisan classes, which he had blood ties with, being the son of a Merchant. He was swiftly arrested and imprisoned, but his book's contents were found so ridiculous that he was released shortly after. Nevertheless, he ceased his activities, guessing rightly that now that the idea was in open publication, others would take up his metaphorical sword. And he was right. The Res Publica became preferred reading among three groups of people: 1.) Ex-Legion soldiers who were persuaded that Hereditary Rule offered no quality control, 2.) Merchants dealing with High Taxation, and 3.) Members of Guilds, all of whom began meeting with each other; due to the Empire dealing with the Stormcloaks and the Dark brotherhood, this was left unnoticed. Finally, the Res Publica began to organize themselves in a single leader, known as Lucius Cincinnatus, whose goal was to use a combination of propaganda, moneyed power, and Ex-Legion discontent in order to launch an uprising all over the Empire. The current strength of the Res Publica are: - 10,000 Ex-Legion Veterans scattered all across Cyrodiil. - 1000 Members of the Fighters' Guild all across Tamriel. - 700 Clergy of Talos forced underground due to the White-Gold Concordat. - 50,000 Civilian supporters. - Enough Money to hire 10,000 Mercenaries, including Mages.
