You might try Terry Goodkind's [i]Sword of Truth[/i] series ([i]Wizard's First Rule[/i] is the first book.)

Terry Brooks' [i]Shannara Series[/i] is an excellent choice. Right now, after a few decades, it is being filmed into a live-action movie, so it has gained a lot of popularity. I would recommend starting with [i]Sword of Shannara[/i], and following up with [i]The Elfstones of Shannara[/i] and [i]The Wishsong of Shannara[/i]. This is the original trilogy, and how many come to discover Mr Brooks' works.

For something more modern urban fantasy, combined with mystery I would recommend Jim Butcher's [b]Dresden Files[/b] with [i]Storm Front[/i] leading off the series. Mr. Butcher will also be kicking off a steampunk series [i]The Cinder Spires[/i] starting with [i]The Aeronaut's Windlass: The Cinder Spires, Book One[/i]. 

Just some quick recommendations for fantasy that might be enjoyable.
