Like I said, it only works with solids. The materials are bonded to his body or shaped on his body in a special way. Metal could cover his arms, or be jutting out of his back like spikes. I'm not sure what solid materials you had in mind that would kill him... I was thinking more along the lines of more common materials. Metal, wood, stone, plastic. Also, he might gain certain properties of the material. For example, wood would allow him to grow sprouts or roots, plastic would make him more flexible, metal would make him magnetic(only in that magnets attract him), stone would make him heavier.
