I love creative freedom in NRPs, which is why things are all over the place. It can be a bit of a downer in keeping things balanced, but as a plus side we have a lot more diverse and interesting nations.
I support freedom, too. Having strict limits is better for the more competitive games or when you are actually building up your civilization during the RP. Think of something where you start from almost contemporary setting to reach high end space opera levels. Anyways, my original plans were for a small civ occupying a few star systems with only one or maybe a few barely habitable planets. Technology-wise the most important war factors that I have superluminal energy weapons with unusually long range and my FTL method is kinda similar to Star Trek's warp. I'll mostly avoid mentioning firepower and try to match it to whatever is going to be reasonable for the setting. (My guess is that the other players pack more firepower than what I originally planned for my ships, thankfully space opera is very forgiving in this aspect) Just mentioning this as a heads up. Hopefully I won't break anything here.
