It's all good, you don't have to be an expert in the lore, as I know a bit myself and I'm sure there's others about who would be more than happy to answer lore questions that are relevant. @Empire: The Empire would not have arisen in the same manner, no, since Palpatine never got the chance to yell "UNLIMITED POWAH!!!" and become Emperor, but it did spawn via a different path. That path being a successor state that rallied others together against the Trade Federation and reclaimed Coruscant. With a power base established, the alliance pushed the Federation out of the Core and claimed it for their own. Shortly after, it was voted that the republic's government had been too weak to contest the Federation by dint of their allowing any and all to have a voice in the senate. The new chancellor of this republic then enacted that only as an Empire could they truly contest the Federation and reclaim the lost systems of the Republic. Of course, that's all subject to change if/when we get someone looking to play as the Empire, as will be the territory they currently occupy.
So this Empire would be a smaller version of what it was? That's cool. Would Palpatine still be at its head? Or would a Council of Moffs have taken the helm? I'm happy to play them, researching them as we speak, actually (the Star Wars universe is pretty readable!), though I'd defer to someone more grounded in the lore. If it were me though, I think Palpatine would have forged ahead, declaring that "All who wish to save what we love, follow me!" more or less. The less trusting of him would have gone and made the Republic successor states, whilst the fence-sitters and the "YAH WARRRRR!!!" types would have backed him. He'd of set aside everything democratic, declaring himself (although I think he already had by this point) the indefinite leader of the Galactic Empire pending the Trade Federation's defeat.
