It's a matter of interpretation at this point, but it sounds as if this world [i]could[/i] be a kind of purgatory limbo for the deceased - or the transcended, whatever that implies. Currently I picture the setting in a slightly dull way, as it's been described to consist of little more than stone corridors in endless twilight, and personally I'd wish for a little more variety.
