Basically, with pokemon, the mother decides the species, so, a brother and a sister will always be the same species... unless they're half-siblings (IE: They share a father, but not a mother). Switching the genders of your character's parents would make your character, well, normal, but it would raise questions about her brother... again, though, he could be her half-brother.
