A whitelist plus giving the thread creator the power to remove people from said whitelist if desired would be a happy medium between the two. I don't know how common such things are, but if someone were to be whitelisted into an RP and then get pissy and start spamming/trolling, it'd be nice for the GM to be able to boot 'em.
