Breeding and training the Pokémon is the best way to go. Even though they're for competitive use, it builds a kind of bond with them. Weird psychological thing that actually has no impact on battles, but I like it. I also like keeping track of which Pokémon of mine that put in the most work. Makes it more personal and fun.
