It's a magical eagle; a Golden Eagle, to be exact. Due to a rune formed on the eagle's chest, created painlessly by both Gabriel and his father, Blaine, she can be summoned directly to the boy's shoulder if Gabriel flexes the magic in his own rune, which is on his palm. Similarly, whenever the eagle is in danger, and her heartbeat quickens, she can teleport itself to Gabriel by pecking the rune on her chest. Due to her unnaturally intelligent nature, being a magical creature, she knows when to do this. She also exhibits a form of mute sentience, understanding everything around it, and responding with quiet, warm squawks, angry pecks, or dismissive flapping of her wings.

She's, by far, Gabriel's absolute best friend, and much like a mother-hen to him.
