I put up the aforementioned grunt and decided to go with a shotgun because it saw pretty widespread use in Vietnam due to the terrain and because Americans like shotguns way more than anyone else.

Edit: Fun fact, a lot of GI's wrote shit on their helmet covers. Remember, this was the draftee US Army, a lot of people didn't want to be there and there was a lot more bitterness among military members in this era.
