God, it was cold. Colder than he'd ever experienced in the winter woods of his home. Trudging slowly, he kept onward with his hand tightly gripping the opposite, bleeding arm. The dark red blood dripped freely. Sometimes in the snow, where it sunk down, almost disappearing. Most of it however, fell onto his shoes- which were surely ruined now. Not that he cared, of course. He had something more important to fret about. The house felt so far away. Just over the hill, he kept mumbling to himself, feeling his body numb in the chill and wind. Why hadn’t he called for help? Why had he been such a stubborn child? He wasn’t sure, but he was almost there. Almost safe At least the cold was helping the pain - so he thought. He barely felt it. Though, to be fair, that should actually concern rather than comfort him. Not like he cared. The numbness helped him keep walking. And walking. And walking. He breathed out, looking at the smoke from his mouth. No, not smoke. Just his breath. It was too cold for fire to come out. He almost could not believe it. Dragon fire is so hot, but the cold stops it? He wasn’t sure. He’d have to ask Rey… If he could. Finally reaching the top of the hill, he looked down. There it was, the house. His hand tightened on his bleeding arm as he nervously started down the steep hill. His ribs ached and his breath was short. Something in his chest was broken. A rib? The breastbone? He didn’t know. But he had to get back, before all this bleeding took its toll. He wanted to call out, shout for help, but he couldn’t find it in him. He’d been walking since nighttime, and the sun was high in the sky now. He clenched his jaw, and carefully walked himself around a tree. He couldn’t afford to hurt himself again. Not after that confrontation- that fight. He’d lost, bad, but at least he’d managed to get away. He’d changed back as soon as he could in this weather, but no amount of dragonic shape shifting could heal his nasty wounds, most notably, the harsh, deep gash on his real, arm. I guess that’s another good thing about having a robotic arm- no pain or harm can come to it, and its insensitive to the cold. Then suddenly, a slip, a twist, a yelp, and he slid down the steep slope, only stopping when his metal shoulder hit a solid pine tree. He whimpered, almost crying, and tried to stand up again. The pain in his foot made him hiss, but it wasn’t unbearable. He continued, almost, almost, almost there. He finally bottomed out in the field, coming close to the back door of the house. He kept whimpering, trying so, so hard to not start crying. Not now. He’d been so strong. A good fighter. Rey’d be proud. He got to the back door, and finally removed his right arm from his left to knock. They were weak, but they got the job done. He heard footsteps, he heard the door open, and in his slight haze he felt the hands of his culture teacher grabbed him, asking him what had happened. “I lost…” He answered, and that was all she wrote. His teacher picked him right up, and brought him inside. “I’m calling Croweyes” He voiced, and as if that was the magic phrase, Jose’s mind fully clouded, and he close his eyes He’d earned the rest.

"I didn't ask for this!!" He snapped at his combat teacher, unable to hiss this time. He lifted his good arm up and thumped his chest, harshly. "You think I'm happy when I look into a mirror and see THIS??" He asked rhetorically, trying to represent everything strange about himself from his scars to his metal arm with that single chest pat. He put his hand down, and his shoulders relaxed in what looked like defeat "I'm a complete freak." He resigned, looking away from the absolutely perplexed, charcoal eyes of his teacher. Rey, having known the child for quite some time, could not believe the words escaping his mouth. He stood in stunned silence for a few seconds to gather thoughts- deeming this not an appropriate place for a large argument, nor the right kind of predicament. Being careful was not something he often did, but what had just happened triggered something in his pupil; a helplessness that Rey himself had never felt, growing up able bodied and complete by most standards. And so, with those thoughts in hand, Rey knelt down to young Jose's level, making eye contact- though it was often hard to do what with his entire eye being the color of an ink blot. "... You don't actually think that, do you?" He asked- meaning it. It wasn't some rhetorical question, either. Jose still wouldn't look at him, but his eyes at least changed direction, "I’ve heard it enough…” he weakly argued, and Rey made sure to commit that to memory. He made a slightly more angry than usual face. “I call bullshit, kid” He replied, and Jose finally looked at him. “You are many things, but a freak? Not on that list.” He stated, standing up. “Now, repeat after me” He instructed. Jose looked perplexed at him. “I am freakin awesome” He quoted, and watched Jose expectantly. “I am freakin awesome..?” Jose answered. Rey made a face, and practically shouted “Louder!” Rey ordered, and Jose jumped “I am freakin Awesome!” Jose shouted. Rey grinned. “Damn straight” He assured, watching Jose as the boy finally smiled, if only a little. “Lets get you home” Rey waved him over, and Jose did in fact follow.
