I like that idea a lot, actually. Maybe they try to cover it up so they don't send the ship into a frenzy as something that's not quite as serious as it actually is. In a "Oh, he just has a foreign bug but he'll be fine, just don't try to detain him if you see him or anything haha..." kind of way.
